I think the spoiler box is irrelevant on this one, because of several things: A) No one cares if I'd ruin the plot; the movie sucks B) I can't really make sense of half of the plot anyway<br/><br/>But I digress… I went into this with decent expectations; the cast was pretty good, the trailers looked exciting, the action seemed intense. Well, here's yet another manifestation of the old cliché "never judge a book by its cover". Where should I begin to describe its crappiness? Its plot is convoluted at best. A sketchy introduction talks about an ancient, yet technologically advanced tribe of Indians who unleash some hell portal, fluff, fluff, fluff, etc… But they come back to life somehow and bad things happen and evil demonic things are gonna take over. It's filled with ancient movie clichés. Evil, monsters, etc. I understand that that's a good mechanic for a movie in many cases, but you need a gimmick for that to work, and Alone in the Dark is just a rehashing of the same old stuff we've seen a hundred times before. <br/><br/>While the action had plenty of potential for greatness, it's all reduced to Christian Slater, Tara Reid and cops shooting at zombies/demon-thingys, or demon-thingys killing random cops/civilians. Not to mention the demon-thingys themselves: they're also quite rehashed. They look like some cheap ripoff of Aliens or something, and they can turn invisible and all this other crap. They have interesting characteristics with potential, but no interesting exploitations of them. The gore in the movie is convincing-looking though, and seeing peoples faces getting ripped in half is usually fun, but when the rest of the movie sucks, it all goes to naught. <br/><br/>Tara Reid is an attractive woman, that's no secret to anybody, but the truth is that's all she is. Having seen this movie, I'm convinced the woman CAN'T ACT. She's just another pretty face polluting the silver screen. Her performance was more than lackluster, it was almostbadthe kid playing Anakin in Star Wars: Episode II if you get what I mean. She showed little emotion and responded the same way no matter the situation, plus she could never pass for a very intelligent archaeologist, it's really not her type of role, I'll give her that.<br/><br/>But by far the worst crime about this movie was the ending. There's no explanation for how stuff happened in the end or how the characters got where they did and whatever. All I'm saying is that there's this cliffhanger (although i don't think anyone's holding their breath) with clear implications of a sequel to come. I certainly hope that never comes to fruition for the millions of unknowing moviegoers who would watch thatmillions of us did this time around.<br/><br/>Do not see this movie unless you are that big a fanatic of action flicks that even the bad ones bring you enjoyment.
I caught a late showing of this film, so there was only 8 people in the theatre. I guarantee you, if there were more people in the theatre, at least 50, there still would be only 8 by the time the credits rolled.<br/><br/>Uwe Boll. I do not understand how this man keeps snatching up video game licenses. You'd think after a few times failing miserably that they wouldn't trust this man with another project, even one with a decent budget and rated R.<br/><br/>This was the worst directing from him yet. When doing a horror movie,it seems the most overused ideas to use to spice up the scenes that are supposed to be the scariest is to use the shaky camera when something scary or action oriented is happening or have something constantly jump out from no where and have glass breaking or some other loud noise suchthat.<br/><br/>With the plot holes and terrible writing, I could go on for days about this film, but I'm not. This made AVP look like it should have won Best Picture. I'm not kidding. Don't waste your money on this flick.
Since the film is based on the Atari video game of the same name, it also has much to appeal to headbangers: fast pace, lots of gadgets, monsters, explosive special effects, plenty of inscrutable plot twists and turns.
